Yahoo Buys Tumblr for $1.1 Billion
The acquisition would mark Yahoo’s most ambitious move yet to revitalize the aging Web portal under CEO Marissa Mayer, who joined the company last July to lead its latest turn around effort. Buying Tumblr would immediately give Yahoo a credible presence in social media through its audience of 117 million unique users worldwide. The six-year-old startup has grown quickly by making it easy for people to set up their own blogs and post content while following others on the site through feed updates. To date, the site boasts more than 108 million blogs and 50.8 billion posts. It had U.S. traffic of 37 million in April, roughly on par with the likes of Twitter and LinkedIn. What’s more, Tumblr’s younger-skewing audience could help Yahoo gain renewed relevance with Millennials and fresh interest from advertisers. So far, Tumblr has taken ago-slow approach to monetizing the site to avoid alienating users. It introduced advertising only last year, selling ads near users’ “dashboards” and in the Spotlight section. Tumblr — which has 175 employees — has raised $125 million in venture funding to date from investors including Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital, giving it a reported valuation of $800 million.

DirecTV Interested in Buying Video Website Hulu
The largest U.S. satellite video provider, DirecTV, is one of the companies considering a bid for online video website Hulu, according to a source familiar with the situation. The person acknowledged that other parties were involved, adding that DirecTV was “one of many” suitors. Media reports have previously identified Time Warner Cable Inc as another company weighing a potential stake in the company. Representatives of DirecTV and Time Warner Cable declined to comment on Friday. Reuters reported in April that former News Corp president Peter Chernin had bid around $500 million for Hulu, the service he helped create in 2007. Reuters also reported that Guggenheim had been hired to advise Hulu and was also contemplating a bid.

Ray William Johnson’s deal with FX isn’t “Web-to-TV”
It’s been a good month for Ray William Johnson. A little over two weeks ago, the man with the third most-subscribed to channel on YouTube announced a deal with Blip, which has made an investment in Johnson’s production company, Runaway Planet, and will work with him to develop new original web video franchises. Now, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, FX has optioned a script for a comedy series “inspired by the life of the internet star.” But don’t call this a “web-to-TV deal” though, because it’s not. As far as we know, Johnson’s involvement with the show will only go as far as that co-creator credit, and maybe (and this is us guessing) offering some story ideas based on his life.

Sony Entertainment Network Online Store Will Launch in Japan on May 29
Almost five months after it launched in the United States, Sony announced today that its Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) online store will be available in Japan from May 29. The browser-based marketplace is somewhat similar to the Google Play store, enabling users to sign in with their existing SEN or PlayStation Network account and buy video games, television shows and films for any supported device that they own. The argument is that consumers are more likely to purchase digital content when they can access the relevant store from a smartphone, tablet or PC. As soon as the content is paid for, it’s automatically added to the “My Downloads” section of the PlayStation Store for either their PS3, PS Vita or PSP.
