Seth Bardelas, Machinima’s vice president of global brand strategy, said “The idea is to incubate the next great sci-fi franchise” of Machinima’s partnership with Ridley Scott’s RSA. Twelve RSA directors will create shorts, Machinima will “develop those shorts, see what bubbles up, what doesn’t, and actually turn that into the next web series, the next movie, the next TV show with the goal, certainly, to launch one of Ridley’s next big movie series.”
Bardelas cited previous incubation successes by other other companies, saying, “We’ve actually seen this phenomenon happening on YouTube already — Neill Blomkamp and ‘District 9,’” adding that “Machinima is just a home for those content creators to actually give their voice, develop their content, and connect it with our audience around the world.”
Both companies are currently “in treatment review. So we’ve received about 60 treatments back from [Scott’s] directors and we’re going to whittle it down to about 12–15,” but after that, the next steps are in RSA’s hands until shorts are complete. Bardelas explained RSA “will be shooting it, they will be editing it, they’ll be developing it, we’ll package it up and then develop that out. So each director gets a budget — and I can’t say what the budget is, but it’s in the six-figure range — where they can each do a 10-minute short and develop that and deliver it to us.”
