Netflix Launches “Max,” a Goofy Virtual Assistant to Help With Recommendations
Netflix this morning announced its own take on virtual assistants like the iPhone’s Siri, with the debut of “Max,” an on-screen guide for the Netflix app on PlayStation 3 devices which helps you find new movies or TV shows to watch. And yes, the guide does talk to you, but thankfully has yet to manifest itself in some more corporeal format, like Microsoft’s “Bob.”
Amazon Studios Now Accepting Short Film Submissions For Feature Development
Short films are the new scripts at Amazon Studios, which is opening its content development factoryto shorts and concept videos for optioning into feature films. The new initiative begins today and works like Amazon’s existing script submission process: 2–15 minute videos can be submitted via Amazon Studios’ website either privately or publicly, with a 45-day option and evaluation period and a $10,000 fee awarded if a short is selected to the development slate.

‘@SummerBreak’ Web Series Fueled by Viewer Feedback
Though only 15 webisodes deep, social media’s first reality series is already making some noise on Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and Instagram. @SummerBreak, a daily web series that details the lives of high school seniors as they spend their final summer together before college, has so far amassed more than 115,000 Twitter followers and has bagged roughly 500,000 views on YouTube since its debut almost two weeks ago. This is a pleasant surprise for the show’s producer, Billy Parks.

Friendship All-Stars is a stop-motion animated comedy series that chronicles the mundane and offbeat adventures of pretend celebrity neighbors living together in a giant apartment building. The series will consist of 10 episodes that will air every other week beginning July 24 on LStudio.com.
Newsy to Launch 30-Minute TV ‘Newscast’
Online video news provider Newsy is launching a new TV “newscast” on Portico TV, a connected TV streaming service from Net2TV. Newsy traditionally produces short news videos, usually two-minutes long, for its website and mobile apps as well as an array of content partners, including most recently MSN News. Per the deal, Net2TV will package these original videos into a 30-minute “show” called “Newsy in 30.” The coverage will span world and domestic news, politics, science, health, entertainment, and sports.

CrowdFlik, the video platform that lets users create, edit and share crowd-sourced video, now has a free CrowdFlik app. The app slices videos into synchronized 10-second segments and assembles them on the CrowdFlik cloud-based edit platform where users can select segments from their videos along with footage captured by other attendees to create personalized multi-angle edits. See How Much Instagram Video Has Affected Vine Usage
A simple graph by Internet analytics firm Topsy shows the effect Instagram’s video function has had on Vine. According to the BBC, the six-second video app had half a million fewer mentions on Twitter the day after the Facebook-owned firm Instagram launched its video functionality. While both sites have seen a drop in usage usage since June 20, Instagram seems to be faring far better than Vine, which has barely made up any of the ground it lost.

Time Warner Cable to launch app for Xbox 360
Time Warner Cable subscribers will soon be able to watch TV straight from their Xbox 360, TWC and Microsoft announced Friday. The TWC TV app for Xbox, set to launch later this summer, offers “up to 300″ live TV channels to Xbox Live Gold members. Once users download the app and log into their TWC account, they can control the app by voice using Xbox 360′s Kinect.
CBS Affiliates Seek Dismissal of Aereo’s Lawsuit
A group of 18 local CBS affiliates argue in new court papers that Aereo’s lawsuit against them should be thrown out on the grounds that it raises questions that are already pending in litigation between CBS and Aereo.“It is well-settled that a plaintiff cannot maintain concurrent duplicative actions on the same subject, in the same court, and against the same party,” the affiliates say in their legal papers, quietly filed late last week in federal court in New York. They are asking U.S. District Court Judge Alison Nathan to dismiss Aereo’s request for a ruling that its service does not infringe copyright.
