Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch, the duo behind the popular FreddieW YouTube channel, are splitting — sort of.
In a post on RocketJump.com titled “Phase Two,” Wong announced that he and Laatsch are reorganizing their channel structure in an effort to pursue the type of projects that interest each of them:
“Over the course of this past year, Brandon and I began pursuing different paths. Matt, Dez, and I worked on Season 2 of “VGHS” as he worked on larger scale VFX shorts and tutorials on the second channel. As filmmakers, we wanted the flexibility to pursue the projects that most interested us — for the past three years, those interests were the same. Moving forward, we both wish to focus on different kinds of content.”
With that in mind, the main FreddieW channel (6.6+ million subscribers) will be renamed RocketJump, after the duo’s production studio of the same name. The second channel, FreddieW2 (1.2+ million subscribers), will be renamed BrandonJLa. The original URLs will continue to direct to each respective channel, but even in name only, that’s how the channels will be referred to by the creators. As Wong describes it, this will allow the creators to work on the projects that they each want to do.
For the time being, both Wong and Laatsch will upload content to the RocketJump channel, while also cross-promoting between the two. Eventually, the goal is for Laatsch to publish his content to his channel, while Wong continues to oversee the RocketJump channel.
Another reason for the name-change, according to Wong, is that RocketJump is more reflective of what he and Rocket Jump Studios want to do going forward, which is to find and collaborate with other creators as well.
As for Wong’s plans for the channel itself:
“Under the RocketJump banner, we will continue our usual shorts (but most likely on a ‘South Park’-esque schedule which will allow us to pursue other projects). We also want to continue ‘VGHS’ and continue to make television and feature length series.”
