The duo discussed what Link at first deemed Rhett’s numerous, short-lived “obsessions.” As the conversation unfolded, it seemed as if Rhett’s suggested vocabulary word of “layers” better explained his long series of interests. Furthermore, it came to light that these interests play a major role in the pair’s body of entertaining work.
From chiropractors and crow hunting to sailing and geology, Rhett’s passions had a range akin to the topics covered by the pair’s show, “Good Mythical Morning.” This is no coincidence. In fact, Link went so far as to suggest, “If your brain didn’t work like this…I don’t believe that we would be doing ‘Good Mythical Morning’ right now.”
Link went on to explain the show’s origins. Every morning on their way to work, Rhett would have something new and intriguing to discuss due to his unending thirst for knowledge of unexplored territory. They figured, why not bring other people into these conversations? Thus, as Link continued, Rhett’s interests “gave us the blind confidence to show up every morning, turn on the camera, and talk about something.”
So as not to run out of material before the morning show, the duo started staying quiet on their way to work. And, as per any strong creative pair, they built off of each other’s strengths. While Rhett unfailingly came up with new content to banter about, Link could always be counted on to provide a strong opinion on any new subject.
“When you look at people who have been doing something creative for a while on YouTube, it’s a partnership,” they attested. There might be something to this somewhat bold declaration. Think of Smosh, the Green brothers (who created VidCon), and the Fine Brothers.
However, as Link pointed out, “Our entire lives don’t overlap.” Rhett elaborated to his partner, “I think I would have to focus more on follow through if you weren’t here, and you would have to focus more on finding something new to be interested in if I wasn’t here.”
