Legendary Entertainment has acquired Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry business, which spans a production company and a network of channels on platforms like YouTube and Hulu. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
As part of the acquisition, Geek & Sundry channels will be added to Legendary’s newly formed digital network, which the studio describes as a “fully-supported platform providing advertising, marketing, audience development, and production infrastructure to digital brands and talent.” The network also includes Nerdist Industries, the production company and media brand launched by fellow geek star Chris Hardwick in 2012.
The goal for the Legendary Digital Network is to become a go-to destination for geek and fanboy content on the web, providing Legendary an “opportunity to create a next generation, scalable network of branded channels,” according to the company. Through this network, Legendary will also look to incubate new IP as well as discover up-and-coming talent.
Launched by Day and co-founders Kim Evey and Sheri Bryant in 2012, Geek & Sundry focuses on geek culture and lifestyle original content. In addition to a YouTube channel that reaches more than 1.4 million subscribers, and features flagship series such as “TableTop” and “Spooked,” the Geek & Sundry network encompasses a vlog channel dedicated to seeking out the next generation of geek talent. The company is also distributes content via a branded channel on Hulu.
The agreement between Legendary and Geek & Sundry also includes a development deal for Day, who will develop both scripted and non-scripted projects for digital and television platforms as a creator and star.
“Bringing Felicia and her stable of branded digital content to Legendary gives the Geek & Sundry properties access to our unique digital infrastructure and also brings us a step closer to expanding the Legendary brand beyond traditional media platforms,” said Bruce Rosenblum, president of Legendary Television and Digital Media, in a statement.
Legendary, behind such geek-favorite franchises as “The Dark Knight” trilogy and the recent “Godzilla” remake, is focused on expanding its digital business. The studio recently struck a deal to adapt Capcom’s hit video-game franchise “Dead Rising” as a digital feature, which will be distributed exclusively via Crackle in the US.
The digital expansion will be done without the involvement of digital content and distribution president Tom Lesinski, who’s exiting the company.
