Amazon has ordered a pilot based on the life of the 18th century Italian writer and adventurer Giacomo Casanova.
According to Deadline, the series, called “Casanova” (naturally), will focus on a lesser-known period in the life of Casanova: his nearly two-decade exile from Italy, when he breaks out of prison and moves to Paris to start a new life. It’s then the man wrote his memoir, which is celebrated as an authentic window into 18th century norms and customs.
Set up at Amazon, the series will be executive produced by Stu Zicherman (a writer and producer on FX’s “The Americans”) and Ben Silverman. Zicherman is also writing the pilot.
This isn’t the first historical drama from Electus and Silverman. He’s the executive producer on Netflix’s “Marco Polo,” which just received a second season, and previously produced “The Tudors” for Showtime. The former NBC executive is also behind the recently ordered Will Arnett comedy, “Flaked,” for Netflix.
Buoyed by its first two major awards wins at the Golden Globes, Amazon Studios recently announced its plans to expand into feature film production. It has also debuted 13 new pilots as part of its ongoing primetime and kids TV development program, which viewers can currently watch and vote on.
