In the role, McLean will lead on business affairs, content licensing, operations, and strategy and business development for the digital enterprises group, which was created by NBCU to grow the company’s digital content and OTT businesses. The group is led by EVP Evan Shapiro, to whom McLean will now report while based in Los Angeles.
“Ben is an innovative leader with a strong background building content strategies for alternative platforms,” said Shapiro in a statement. “His insights and industry expertise will be key assets as we continue to build our team.”
McLean comes to NBCU after a short stint as SVP of business affairs for the now-defunct Xbox Entertainment Studios. There, he was part of the senior team that designed various SVOD and AVOD original programming initiatives for the Xbox console and other Microsoft platforms. He was the primary deal-maker for the slate of programming that XES had in development or production.
Prior roles for McLean include stints at Pivot TV and Netflix, where he was senior counsel responsible for structuring content licensing agreements for the company’s expansion into Europe.
McLean’s hire comes a few days after former XES boss Nancy Tellem joined interactive video firm Interlude as its new executive chairman and chief media officer.
