YouTube Red Strikes Historic Deal with Gunpowder&Sky
YouTube Red has a distribution problem. But it’s starting to work that out by opening up the rights to its original series and feature-length project to new distributors. It’s the first time YouTube has made its titles available for windowing. Today that looks like a multi-year licensing and international distribution deal with Gunpowder&Sky, the studio founded by Floris Bauer and Van Toffler, for 9 full-length feature films and series. Gunpowder&Sky has acquired the rights for distribution across all Linear TV, Pay TV, SVOD, EST and home video. Among the titles being distributed are “Escape The Night“, “Prank Academy” and “Sing It!”. As YouTube continues to look more and more like traditional television, it’s likely deals like this will continue.
“Our mission from the start was to not only create our own IP, but to also partner with progressive companies like YouTube to help distribute their content on multiple platforms,” said Bauer. “Having already successfully worked with them on two of their original features [“A Trip to Unicorn Island” and “Lazer Team”], we are very happy to continue our partnership with YouTube Red in releasing their exciting slate of films and series to new audiences worldwide.”
Gunpowder&Sky is working to reimagine the design of a modern-day studio and via its various acquisitions and investments, that vision is starting to come to life. Gunpowder&Sky Distribution has specialized in licensing and distribution to new and old media networks internationally, under the leadership of Janet Brown — who built FilmBuff, the predecessor to G&S Distribution.
“We are proud to be partnering with such a forward-thinking team at YouTube, and are excited to help bring their quality content to even more audiences around the world,” said Janet Brown, EVP of Distribution, Gunpowder & Sky. “YouTube’s mission fully aligns with our mission to create diverse breakthrough content and take risks with new models for how to release and market that content – whether via TVOD/SVOD platforms, TV or AVOD.”
