1. Speech on Education

“The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university,” defines, “education,” according to several dictionaries. In short if you are a receiver, you are receiving knowledge.

Knowledge is power,” is a phrase commonly attributed to 16 th century British politician, Sir Francis Bacon and is probably as commonly quoted as ‘seize the day’ or ‘who dares wins’.

Giving and receiving education has been around for millions of years and used by many different species. When a primitive monkey climbs a branch and dips a straw into a bees nest to collect honey and her young son watches and remembers, he is learning as the receiver of education and if he strives to remember the lesson he will have the power to eat honey.

Humans have evolved and strived to impart and receive much more sophisticated levels of education. Education for the masses has brought more knowledge to the masses. As new generations have learned from older generations, they have added to that information and in turn, will pass their newly attained knowledge to the next generation.

When a country suffers from poverty, education for children suffers. Poverty and bad education are inseparably linked as is a good education and wealth creation.  People living in poverty may stop their children from going to school so they can work, which leaves them illiterate and without the numeracy skills, they need to further their careers. The cycle continues with their own children, who in turn, are in a similar situation years later, with little income and little options and have to leave school and work.

The essence of education: Education stimulates the intelligence in human beings, makes them skillful, and also knowledgeable. It also directs the undeveloped interests into desirable channels to help themselves and their community gain respect. A good example is a violinist. After working for a few years at learning the skill, the able violinist becomes a pillar of social life as a member of an orchestra or can play at functions to earn money. Notwithstanding that a sense of self respect is gained in such a noble pursuit.

Let us stand on the shoulders of greats for a minute or two: Ben Franklin said: “If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”

And the importance of education was not lost on Abraham Lincoln:  “Upon the subject of education … I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people may be engaged in.”

Education opens up the mind, expands it, and allows you to improve your life in so many ways. For this reason, governments should make it all-consuming policy to improve the education of all children, rich or poor. Then all people and all nations can harness the great power of knowledge.
