DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has said he decided to buy AwesomenessTV to fill in the “gaps” in our daily lives that films and TV couldn’t reach. Short-form video providers like AwesomenessTV, which see a lot of consumption on mobile devices, are perfect for these gaps.
They can also be great promotional vehicles. DreamWorks Animation has posted the newest trailer for “How to Train Your Dragon 2” on the main AwesomenessTV channel, instead of — as far as I can tell — its existing DreamWorks Animation channel. Why? Because it’s the obvious choice. The animated feature, which is scheduled to premiere on June 13, 2014, is meant for the same demographic that AwesomenessTV caters to — kids and teens. And trailers, by their very nature, are short-form and shareable, which aligns with Katzenberg’s earlier comments on where YouTube content providers like AwesomenessTV fit in the entertainment ecosystem.
