Pentatonix, the a cappella quintet that first garnered fame on NBC’s “The Sing-Off” in 2011, now joins the cast of “Pitch Perfect 2.” The movie’s a cappella focus provides these YouTube stars a great chance to further showcase their talents outside of the digital realm.
The group includes Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying (all high school friends) plus later additions Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. They started gaining lots of traction on YouTube following their recording of Beyonce and Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” which they put together for a competition and ended up posting on the digital video platform.
Having since uploaded tons of videos to the platform, they now boast nearly 500 million views and have made various appearances on television.
For “Pitch Perfect 2,” Pentatonix joins fellow YouTuber DJ Flula. Though Pentatonix will play the role of competitors to the film’s protagonist, Flula’s character in the film has yet to be revealed.
Universal Studios’ “Pitch Perfect 2” is set for a May 15, 2015 release. The movie that precedes it actually boasts some popular videos on the online platform itself.
