YouTube dance MCN DanceOn will is helping cast an upcoming dance movie, “Breaking Through.” John Swetnam, the movie’s writer/director, and its executive producer John Legend will work with DanceOn to select dancers from YouTuber submissions sent to DanceOn’s website, as first reported by Deadline.
“Breaking Through” will star Sophia Aguiar and Jordan Rodrigues as their characters grow up in the digital age. YouTube dancers chosen from the casting call will appear in the drama through a live taped performance, taking place this August, or through their own videos, which will appear in the film.
Swetnam and Legend will also film for the movie during DanceOn Spotlight: The Ultimate Dance Experience Event, which will happen in Los Angeles on August 29.
Some well known YouTube dancers will appear at the event, such as choreographer Ian Eastwood. Les Twins, dancers for Beyoncé, and Poreotics will performer among others at the August DanceOn Spotlight.
YouTube network DanceOn currently has over 10 million subscribers and boasts over 2 billion cumulative views. Founders include Madonna, Allen DeBevoise, Guy Oseary, and the network’s CEO, Amanda Taylor. Nigel Lythgoe, of “So You Think You Can Dance,” counts among DanceOn’s investors, along with executives from Zefr, Roku, Newscorp, and MediaLink.
