In an interview with Bloomberg, Nielsen said it plans to start measuring TV content on Netflix and Amazon by mid 2015. “That will be the last significant portion of overall television content viewing that we don’t already measure,” said Mitch Barns, CEO of Nielsen, which wants to help TV programmers and content owners determine exactly what kind of viewership their shows get on top SVOD services. The idea is that this could help content owners when negotiating licensing deals with such services.
In the world of virtual reality, Fox Sports has partnered with VR startup NextVR to test out live, long-form VR experiences for NASCAR, according to Variety. The test included recording live VR footage at the NASCAR Xfinity Series race and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race last weekend, and then broadcasting that immediately to Fox Sports executives and producers on location.
Voting has begun for “The Greenies,” an online short-film competition from Adaptive Studios, the producers of HBO’s “Project Greenlight.” The competition, which is hosted by YouTube stars John Flickinger (TheFlickPick), Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis (SchmoesKnow), and Jason Horton, will award some of the best short films submitted for the new season of “Project Greenlight.” Winners will be announced on April 2 for six categories, including “Best Drama,” “Best Comedy,” “Best Horror,” “Best Action,” “Most Unique,” and “Most WTF,” and will be based on the number of “likes” the films get on YouTube.
YouTuber Toby Turner has launched a game for iOS after having raised almost $650,000 through Indiegogo for it. Called “Wizards,” the game is based on Turner’s animated series “Tobuscus Adventures,” playing off episode five of the series. In the game, you’re Tobuscus, aiming to defeat evil wizards and defend your castle from zombies. It costs $4.99 and will come to Android in the future.
Sick of Facebook news today? Too bad! Here’s something else: Facebook is going the way of Netflix with its new continuous autoplay feature. Currently in test mode, the feature means that after Facebook users finish watching one video on the platform, another “related video” will start to play if they don’t click elsewhere. According to Recode, who first reported the story, a spokesperson from Facebook said that the feature is currently being tested on iOS and Android but didn’t provide additional information.
