As first reported by Capital NY, Huffington Post founding Editor Roy Sekoff has announced his departure from the digital publisher. The move was revealed to HuffPost staffers in a missive from Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington. In the memo, after a reminder about the company’s holiday pajama party, Huffington revealed that Sekoff was leaving the company ostensibly due to the stress of weekly cross-country travel. Sekoff resides in LA and was making weekly commutes to HuffPost HQ in New York. Read the full memo below:
HuffPosters, I want to remind you that tomorrow night is our holiday pajama party (your holiday pajamas will be on your desk when you arrive). I look forward to seeing you at Provocateur, as well as celebrating all that we did together in 2015 and toasting all the possibilities in 2016.
We will also be raising a glass, in a bittersweet toast, to Roy Sekoff, HuffPost’s founding editor and my partner-in-crime for the past 16 and-a-half years. It’s time for him to, as he put it to me, “stop dancing to the rhythms of the 24/7 news cycle.” After years of cross-country commuting, he has decided to spend less time on planes and more time helping his daughter with her homework, while figuring out what he wants to do next.
Trying to express all that Roy has meant to the site — and personally to me, as we watched our children grow up together — would be an exercise in futility. Roy will always be a part of HuffPost, and I know HuffPost will always be a part of him.
At HuffPost, the focus on redefining success, and on how we live our lives, isn’t theoretical. These aren’t just editorial angles; we believe in them deeply and we try to live by them. Over the last few months, Roy and I have had many conversations about how unsustainable his current lifestyle had become — flying from L.A. every Monday and back home every Friday.
Roy’s only immediate plans involve a yoga mat, a huge stack of backlogged books, long hikes in the Santa Monica mountains, and a prime spot in the carpool line at his daughter’s school. And I have to confess that I’m hoping with all my heart that, after a revivifying break, he will follow in the footsteps of a long line of HuffPosters who have taken some time away then returned to the fold.
Tomorrow we’ll raise a glass to Roy…and for now, please join me in wishing him the very best as he unplugs, recharges, then sets off on his next adventure.
Sekoff joined the Huffington Post in 2005 and served as a founding editor for ten years. In 2012, he was named President of HuffPost Live the publisher’s live streamed digital news and interview program.
