It’s that time of year again — iab has announced the Newfronts schedule for 2017, the 6th annual conference week where executives in the digital and linear entertainement space tout projects to be made and platforms to be scaled. Set for May 1–12, the Newfronts will once again feature Newfronts Cofounders — AOL, DigitasLBi, Google/YouTube, Hulu, and Yahoo — as well as the returning companies Fullscreen, Refinery29, Awesomeness TV, DEFY Media, Maker Studios / Disney, Time Inc., among others.
Despite it’s must-attend pressure, the Newfronts have consistently served as a mega-marketing exercise more than the marketplace it was intended to be. The now 2-week long conference has caught flack for being a large expenditure of cash without having tangible connections to deal making. In fact, many deals announced at the presentations are products of the conference madness that follows the top of the New Year including CES, NATPE and Sundance.
Shows that are presented are often only made if sold to a brand or with a financier to underwrite budgets; few are making big upfront bets on programming on their own dimes.
“Digital video programming and the audiences it attracts have become a cornerstone in brand marketing strategy,” said Anna Bager, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile and Video, IAB. “Investment in the medium has been significant — with 51 percent year-over-year growth in the first half of 2016 alone.”
